The selection of areas to copy or else can cause some troubles, hence we have added that chapter…
Indeed, you must set the mouse-buttons use prior, please see this page.
The settings of the selections can be chosen in the sub-menus of the Edit Menu, like shown below :
The use of a predefined Size¦Ratio doesn't pose big problems generally.
But the Custom selection is not quite obvious to handle whether you didn't use it yet !
Its related commands - highlighted on the image - are not to configure here, but to execute !
To illustrate this, below is a user's complaint on the French forum, and our reply in brief :
«In the Edit Menu —> Set selection ratio, there is an item-type “Custom C”, but it remains grayed desperately …»
Yes, sure ! This is quite normal ! To get an available customized selection, you ought make it first !

Open an image from which you want to copy a certain X * Y part.
Select the needed area, and look at the status-bar to see the evolution of the selection about its dimensions, adjust them fine, according to these indications and your need.
Go to Edit MenuSet selection SizeSave selection as custom. Miracle The next item became available !
Now, you are able to use the Custom selection, and to place¦move it at the right location on any pic. Please, see the settings to move the selection in the Options : ViewKeyboard ¦ Mouse to define the use of the mouse-buttons.
Of course, the status-bar must be displayed : View MenuTick the box.

Let's notice that both the selection size and ratio will be saved…
…which is confusing sometimes, because the similar items on these two sub-menus.
When the function is blank (not used yet), the state of the items is else, like the User said in his complaint above.

Customized effect-filters

The command allowing to create such a filter can be found as an entry of the Filter Menu.
It opens a dialogue-box in which you can either configure a new filter, or choose an already defined one :
Like you can see above, there is a [7*7] matrix as an array of input fields in the Right section of the dialogue,
in which you will select the weight of each pixel. The main (central) pixel is clearly shown.
The Left section displays a list of filters already defined and saved, thus immediately usable.
Below, there are fields to select the division ratio (Divisor), which should be equal to the sum of all weights
if the effect has not to change the luminosity (brightness) of the pixel.
The last parameter (Bias) can change the final luminosity of the pixel.
How does it work?
Let's check some examples :

Filed “Divisor” contains 6 and “Bias” 0.
Now, how the pixel is it calculated ?
It works in matrix style, the main pixel marked as red-bold is the pixel which is on evaluation.
The pixels around are pixels which are positioned in the visually same position around the main pixel.
For each channelthis matrix is evaluted by multiplying the channel value by the given number,
then the result of these operations is divided by the division ratio (Divisor) and incremented by the selected number.
You can use all integer numbers (negative too) including 0.
If the division factor is 0, the output sum isn't divided (it gives the same result as there is number 1).
If you want to create an effect which should not do anything (so that has not any importance, just to test), you can create it like below …

…and you set the division ratio to 1 and bias to 0.
The size of the filter is set by using automatically the needed cell-fields only around the main pixel. The minimum filter is indeed 3*3 :

Choose the size in the drop-down list “X Y” set at the top-right of the dialogue.
Enter the needed values in the cells.
Let's notice that only the necessary fields are available, the others turn greyed :
Whether the created filter is convenient, you can save it by the Save button. It'll be added onto the left-side list.
A filter can be edited or removed from the list using the appropriate buttons becoming available as soon as you select an entry on that list.
The Apply button applies the active filter of that dialogue to the currently displayed image.
If you have created an interesting filter, please inform the Author !

Chapter Menu

This is a group of features added since the 1.90 version. They will be probably more appreciated by some photographers, professional or amateur having to manage large collections of images…
Categories
They are “virtual containers” in which one can classify the images according to customized themes.
All images will remain in their own original directories, they will not be moved.
Because we show custom icons in this Help folder, below are the original default ones :

To create a category, right-click on the header-icon of the Category Tree and choose the item “New category”
on the local menu which pops up.
A new “Category” icon is added on the tree, with an in-place field allowing to name this new category.
To remove a category, right-click its icon, then choose the “Delete” item on the local menu.
To rename a category, choose “Rename” on the local menu. Use the in-place field to rename…
To add images in a category :
Drag & Drop the image from the board of thumb nails or the list on the icon of the chosen category.
To remove an image from a category :
Left-click the icon of the wanted category in order to display its contents (as thumb nails or list)
Right-click the corresponding item to remove (the thumb nail or the row of the list)
On the local menu, choose either “Remove from this category”, or “Remove from all categories” when you know that this image is also set in other containers and that you wish to remove it from everywhere.
Rating…
This is another kind of virtual container.
It shows the value¦quality attributed to an image in the same way than a “school mark” with the range 1 (bad) up to 5 (excellent).
This is totally personal and suggestive, because an image can have a high informative value for a user - despite it has not any aesthetic value -, while that same image looks ugly and is not meaningful for another user !
Numbers are used in France for such marks, the worst being the famous dreaded "Red dotted zero", so we used it as the bullet-motif for that paragraph…
Below, the original default icons (stand for both Rating and Colour Label) :

“Unrated” is shown with the icon #2 from the left side (default : empty - ours : black).
To set a rating for an image :
Select the image on the board of thumb nails or on the list, then open the View Menu,
On its “Rating & Colour Label” sub-menu, choose the rating to set.
The icon of the chosen rating is shown as overlaying the thumb nail, or as a digit in the “Rating” column of the list.
To remove¦change a rating :
Same handling than above, but choose “Unrated” prior !
A different rating shall not replace a previous one ! It'll be added in the corresponding container ( in excess… ).
However, it's possible that this occurs under some OSs only (this is the behaviour here under XP-Pro SP1)…
Feedback welcome about this !
If so, perform the same operation one more time, and now choose the new different rating…
Colour Label
This last virtual container of the group allows to define a use or a level of urgency to work with that image.
The operations are the same than for the Rating before.
You have only to choose the needed items in the lower section of the same "Rating & Colour Label" sub-menu.

Since the 1.90 version, this new function allows you to export directly an image using advanced criteriaæ.
One can export choosing a format among the height ones available in the tab-header.
Each chosen format makes that all existing parameters for this format are displayed automatically.

This dialogue seems close of an improvement¦Option for “Save as…” which is proposed still in the French Forum and the English Forum…
Unfortunately, it seems that “Export” has not been designed to satisfy the same needs…
For instance, we miss a second path to save as a second format (like requested in the threads linked above) and also (a) “Wildcard” tab¦s
(to configure at will) to save the image as (a) non-planned file-type¦s…

Send by E-mail

From this command, XnView invokes the default Web mailer stated in Windows Explorer only.
Thus, you have to define¦verify this setting prior.
Define¦Verify the default Web mailer
Open Internet Explorer, then its Tools Menu Internet Options.
Choose your favourite E-mail client from the drop-down list.
Click “OK”, it's done !
From the Tools Menu of XnView, you get the dialogue-box below.
Fill out the fields, type your text, define the size from the drop-down list, and tick¦set the wished options :

When clicking OK, the defined e-mail client is started, then you can send the image¦s…

Open a file from the Web

This is a “surprise-feature” which has been discovered and reported in that thread of the forum.
This can be performed in two ways, like explained in the thread.
It should be interesting that the Author “digs” a bit the slowness issue when pasting the URL…
The Drag & Drop way works already rather well and fast, though.
Thanks to the user Drahken who discovered that by chance.
