Create your own tool-bar skins…

Keep the icons-order absolutely, like it's shown on the example below,

Choose any dimension for the icon-width; however, avoid to exceed the screen-width, according to the usual lowest definition, for instance 800 * 600... The recommended width for an icon is 19 to 23 pixels. The bar-height must be up to 25 ... 27 pixels or more. With a 1024*768 definition, each icon-width can be up to 31 pixels. An odd value is better to centre the motif.
Draw as *.BMP - 256-colour; the 24-bit and 32-bit pics work too, but their sizes are much larger…
Do not draw any space between the icons, or a margin at any side...
Do not use "Magenta" pink (RGB = 255 / 0 / 255/) inside a motif, because XnView uses it as the transparent background !
Since the 1.60 version, you can draw too a complementary greyed version of your tool-bar bitmap.
It'll display the same icons for the disabled functions than the normal ones. But these icons'll look as all grey silhouetted pics (optional, the program is able to display blurred icons now…). Below, the complementary bar with the icons-order pattern :

New tool-bar bitmap for the 1.95.xx versions and newer

Twelve icons have been added in the bitmap starting from the 1.95 beta versions.
Still using the numbering above (from “1” to n…) they are :

Now, you can customize too the small Browser tool-bar (located above the thumbnails table at the top ¦ left corner).
The size of each icon is limited to 16*16 pixels. There are eleven icons in this bar, so it'll be always 176*16 pixels currently :

To add your new tool-bar onto the XnView Options preview window:
1. Open the <Skins> sub-directory in the XnView folder,
2. Create a new folder within the <Skins> sub-directory, named i.e. : <My_Bar>
3. Place your bitmaps in this new folder,
4. Create a simple plain text file always named info.txt in which you will write :
  
  label = "Skin Name (Author)"
  filename = "main.bmp" Mandatory, or else the bitmap is no longer recognized in the 1.8x versions !
  disabled = "my-grey-blurred-bar-image.bmp"
  small = "browser.bmp"
  width = xx
  height = yy
  version = 3 (*)
  
  Where:
  • width = xx is the width of each image in pixels,
  • height = yy is the bar-height in pixels.
  • version = 3 shows that the skin is designed for the version 1.90 and newer.
  (*) For the 1.95 versions and newer, use version = 4
5. Start XnView; in the OptionsToolbar, your bar is added in the preview-window, you can select and use it!
6. You can send it to the Author too!
- In versions older than 1.45, the skins sub-dir was so-called: ‹skin› (without a final "s"); now, it's named ‹skins›! So, if you make an update from a ZIP archive, changing only the indispensable files, you ought rename your skin-dir. into ‹skins›! Or else, the skins preview-window'll stay empty, except the default-bar…
Other customizable icons
- Metadata overlay icons on the thumb nails :

- Can replace the original Black & White images, rather tristounette and hard to spot…
- BMP size : 107*11 pixels. File-name : info1.bmp
- Attention ! All motives are not equal at width !
- We advise you to copy¦save the image above, then to change it according to your own tastes
  (the possible changes are so limited…)
- Add your bitmaps in the folder¦s of the skin¦s you are in the habit to use the most.
- In the <info.txt> files of this¦these skin¦s, add a line like :
- icninfo = 1
- This line stands also for the first bitmap of the next paragraph…
- Category ¦ Rating ¦ Colour label
- You need to add two bitmaps for these icons into the skin¦s folder¦s, the first one :

- BMP size : 143*11 pixels. All motives are 11² pixels each. File-name : info2.bmp
- The second bitmap :
- 1 18
- There are 17 motives plus an empty area (uncertain using…). BMP size : 288*16 pixels. File name : tree.bmp
- Same advice : Copy¦Save …
- In the <info.txt> file¦s of the skin¦s, add a line like:

- “Compare” and “Export” windows tool-bar
- It's displayed on each pane of the “Compare” window :

- Size of the BMP you must add into the skin¦s folder¦s : 96*16 pixels. File-name : imbar.bmp.
  There are six equal motives, 16² pixels each :
  
  1. Zoom in 2. Zoom out 3. Best fit the page 4. Scale 1:1 5. Close 6. Delete
- In the <info.txt> file¦s of the skin¦s, add a line like :
- imbar=1
- Our images shown here have been drawn for testing, they are not wonderful… An example on the screen, though…
- JPEG Transformations Bar
- It's the bar displayed when you click the JPEG Lossless Transformation on the bar of the current view :

- Size of the BMP you must add into the skin¦s folder¦s : 192*32 pixels. File-name : jpgbar.bmp.
  There are six equal motives, 32² pixels each
  
  1. Rotation 90° Left 2. Rotation 90° Right 3. Rotation 180° 4. Rotation according to Exif 5. Vert. mirror 6. Hor. mirror
- In the <info.txt> file¦s of the skin¦s, add a line like :
- jpgbar=1
- On the “Look”image above, we added pale separators and arrow-points to mark the edge of each icon.
  The vertical separator line belongs to the side of the arrow point.
- Copy rather this image as a base to draw you customized bar…
- Suggested and pending…
- Among others, images for the layouts of the panes in the Browser (to set in the menu)
  have been proposed to the Author.
  To do so, two ways have been suggested : either like here by adding these images in the skin folder (as a strip),
  or from bitmap-libraries to state simply with INI entries.
- Advantages : the libraries can be located anywhere, are easier to change and have a fast loading.
- For instance, images larger than the original ones, and numbered :
- The current layout #8 has been added since the 1.9x versions…
